The the history of this woman's stirring, eventful life found in her 1894 autobiography "Cattle Queen of Montana" reads like a thrilling Western, except Libby is the "real deal" and her autobiography is "real stuff" rather than a work of fiction.As Libby describes, her book contains narratives of thrilling adventures, recitals of stirring events, tales of hardships and privations, anecdotes of personal experience, and descriptions of the plains, the mines, cattle raising industry, and other features of Western Life, gleaned from a forty years residence in the far West.Libby owned a vast cattle ranch 25 miles from Choteau, a little settlement in Montana, 65 miles from the nearest town, Great Falls. She raised thousands of cattle, and, every year, shipped car-loads of them to the Chicago market, accompanying them herself and making her sales personally. She had larger cattle interests than anyone in the North-West, man or woman, and her success was entirely due to her own energy and efforts. She had had to fight a great many difficulties, because of the fact that she was a woman. When she began to ship her stock to the Eastern market, she found herself confronted by railway rules and regulations which expressly stated that no woman could ride in the cabooses attached to the stock-trains. This raised a storm of indignation among the ranchmen and cattlemen of Montana, and evoked an avalanche of protesting and angry letters. All the principal cattlemen of the West threatened a boycott and Mrs. Collins got her pass at once.Libby's ranch was eventually passed down to her daughter Carry and son-in-law Frank Salmond, and is today known as the "Salmond Ranch." As noted by local newspaper Fairfield Sun Times, "If there is a single ranch along the Eastern Slope of the Rocky Mountains that serves as the front line between the Cattlemen and those in the government and radical environmental groups that want to push them out of the foothills, it’s the Salmond Ranch."Before ranching in Montana, Libby, at age 17, and her brother Chan were offered employment by the wagon-master of a 100-wagon train which traveled from Denver to and from the Missouri River. She served as the cook and he as a freighter. She made 12 trips across the plains. All the kinds of adventures imaginable on wagon trips across the plains occurred, including skirmishes with Indians, (in fact, she was captured by a tribe at one point), bad weather, and rugged country. Her last trip across the plains marked the date of her settlement in Montana.She and her brother arrived in Virginia City, Montana via the Bozeman Trail in 1863 with a freighting wagon. Virginia City was filled with folks filled with dreams of gold and getting rich quick. As the first woman in the Teton Valley, Libby would eventually marry a Vigilante, the couple first mining together and later starting a cattle ranch.
